The following is copied from the Y&DSCL Hall of Fame page for Collis King:
Collis King quite simply could not be left out of the League’s ‘Hall of Fame’ even though he has only graced the grounds in our League for a mere ten seasons. However, the Panel of Judges felt that his fantastic performances, firstly with Stillington and then with Dunnington fully justified them setting aside any thoughts of long service and the inclusion of ‘Kingdom’ in the Hall was fully supported.
Born in Barbados, Collis made his first class debut for his home island in 1972 as a right-handed batsman and rightarm medium pace bowler. He went on to make 6770 runs at an average of 38.24 in 125 first class games and also claimed 128 wickets at 34.21. His highest score was 163 which he struck impressively off the Northamptonshire attack when West Indies toured England in 1976 whilst his best bowling was 5 for 91. He made his test debut in 1976 and played in 9 tests hitting a test hundred against New Zealand which he feels was his most memorable performance. He also gained much satisfaction in taking 125 off an attack which included Denis Lillee and Jeff Thompson in Guyana whilst most cricket lovers will recall his 86 in the World Cup Final at Lords. After spells with Glamorgan and Worcestershire, Collis had three seasons playing for Natal.
Meanwhile Collis had embarked on a a career in the competitive world of Lancashire League Cricket where he turned in top performances with Nelson, Colne and Blackpool and also with Westhoughton in the Central Lancashire League. His signing by fourth division Stillington in 1996 was a major coup for the club which enabled him to set off on a record-breaking spree which has continued to the present time.
In his opening season with Stillington, Collis created a new run aggregate record for any wicket when his 1668 runs at 104.25 raised the bar by 365 runs from Geoff Skilbeck’s previous record of 1303. Collis posted 1163 runs in 1997, 918 in 1998 as Stillington were promoted and then hit over 1000 runs in both 1999 and 2000 in division two. His efforts also saw him top the batting averages in four out of the five years.
He marked his fiftieth birthday by joining premier division side Dunnington and totally dispelled the few doubts about his ability to make runs in our top bracket. He topped the league averages in his first three seasons and made over 1000 runs as leading run-maker in both 2002 and 2004. With a further 829 runs flowing from his bat in 2005, Collis’ run aggregate in the York League stands at 10654 in a mere 176 innings at a whopping average of 81.33
He holds the unique record of having hit centuries in ten consecutive seasons whilst his tally of 34 centuries puts him 12 ahead of his nearest rival. He has made over 1000 runs on six occasions whereas no-one else has done this more than twice and his 212 against Clifton Alliance last season is comfortably the highest score in the premier division and only two short of a league record. He was the first player to hit six centuries in a season in his last season with Stillington.
He completed the double in each of his five seasons with Stillington, having topped both the batting and bowling averages in 1996. He repeated this feat in 2001 when his 824 runs and 36 wickets saw him to double top in the premier division.
Aa a captain he led Stillington to divisional success and also skippered Dunnington to League Championship, League Cup and President’s Challenge success. He is a three times winner of the League Batting Award having lifted the Des Wyrill Cup in 2001, 2002 and 2004 and has won the Monthly Batting Award a record seven times.
Collis says “It has given me great pleasure playing in the York Senior League and I hope that I have, in some way, inspired the younger players to work hard and achieve success”. He is admired by everyone for his playing ability, his sporting manner and his extremely social after-match company and his place in the Hall of Fame is very well deserved.
